SMASH HITS, first officially christened in early 2002 by two intrepid A&R foot soliders at a major record label, started out as a collection of the "best of the worst" demo submissions. They took it upon themselves to compile these laughably awful tracks into a collection for the enjoyment of their co-workers. Over time, however, the legend of Smash Hits spread far and wide, spawning three complete collections, two "release parties" and an unwavering appreciation for all those bands that shoot for the stars...and miss. Big time.
Smash hits are not merely bad - they are those rare musical gems that manage to transcend mere incompetence to achieve a sort of unintentional genius, usually due to a total lack of self-awareness on the part of the artist.
As long as there is someone out there willing to record a spectacularly off-key cover of "The Rose" or actually name a band Abortion Candy Machine, there will always be a little bit of magic in the world.
